Aguero has to convince Man City he believes in his ability – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has insisted that Sergio Aguero is one of the best strikers on the planet but has to started believing in himself more.

Aguero had gone six games without a goal for Man City prior to their 4-0 thrashing of West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, but he was back to his usual best with two goals and an assist at the Hawthorns.

The Argentine striker now has seven goals in the Premier League, just one behind the leading scorer, Diego Costa. In 13 games across all competitions, he has found the back of the net 13 times.

Aguero is undoubtedly one of the best strikers around and Guardiola knows it, but the Spaniard has called on his star player to demonstrate greater self- belief.

“In the box he is at that level,” Guardiola told reporters. “But Aguero has to convince. He’s one of the nicest players I ever trained in my career. It’s a pleasure for me to work with nice people and Sergio is one of the best ones by far.

“But to convince people he has to believe how good he is and how we need him.

“He has to try that. It is not about how many goals he scores because we’re happy with the scoring. If he doesn’t score it is not because I’m not happy with him, his behaviour or body language.

“When he is good everything can happen in our team. Never in his career has he been aggressive. I don’t want Aguero to run behind the central defenders, I don’t want Aguero to jump higher than the other strikers – they’re taller than him. I’m talking about he has to feel how important he is for us. When he’s happy of course all the team is happy.”

Aguero has a superb scoring record already this season but he could have had more having missed three penalties for Man City and one for his country.
