Akpom: I’ve told Iwobi I’ll be playing with him next season

Arsenal youngster Chuba Akpom has shared his delight at seeing Alex Iwobi score his first senior goal for the club and vowed to be playing alongside him next season.

Akpom, 20, progressed through the youth ranks at Arsenal alongside Iwobi, 19, and has featured four times for the Gunners in the Premier League after making his debut in 2013.

The England Under-21 international who also like Iwobi hails from Nigeria was allowed to join Hull City on a season-long loan deal in August but he has set his sights on proving to Arsene Wenger that he deserves to be in Arsenal’s squad next season.

When asked what he thought about Iwobi and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford’s recent performances, he told BT Sport: “It’s always good to see young British talent shining in the Premier League.

“Alex [Iwobi] I grew up with, he’s like a brother to me, so I’m buzzing for him and his progress and I’ve told him hopefully it will be and him playing together next season.

“This summer and in pre-season I’m going to do the best that I can.”

Iwobi, who has already been capped by Nigeria at senior level, first showed glimpses of his quality in the Emirates Cup last summer, scoring against Lyon in a 6-0 victory, but has recently broke into the Gunner’s first-team squad.

After starting against Barcelona in the Nou Camp, Iwobi retained his place for Arsenal’s trip to Everton last weekend and he capped his first Premier League start with a goal.

He will now be looking to push on and cement his place in the side on a regular basis from now until the end of the season as Arsenal bid to close the gap on Leicester City at the top.
