How Arsenal can qualify for the Champions League after beating Southampton

Arsenal ensured their pursuit of a place in the Premier League top four and the Champions League qualification that comes with it remains on thanks to victory over Southampton.

A superbly taken goal from Alexis Sanchez was backed up by a strike from substitute Olivier Giroud as Arsenal won 2-0 at St Mary’s.

So what must happen now for Arsenal to finish in the top four?

They now trail Liverpool – who have played a game more – by four points and Man City by three points.

Realistically Arsenal need to win their remaining games. That means beating Stoke, Sunderland and Everton. Even then however, Champions league qualification wouldn’t be guaranteed.

Man City would need to lose one of their three games – and even that might not be enough considering the superior goal difference held by Pep Guardiola’s side. They play Leicester, West Brom and Watford – games they seem unlikely to falter in.

Liverpool are the more realistic target. If Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to win one of their two games then Arsenal can pounce. They play West Ham away and then Middlesbrough at home on the last day.
