Arsenal are happy to just finish in the top four every season – Ferdinand

Arsenal‘s ambitions are to finish in the top-four in the Premier League every season, Rio Ferdinand has stated.

The Gunners’ wait to be crowned champions of England for the first time since 2004 is set to continue beyond this season having fallen even further behind the leaders Chelsea following back-to-back defeats against Watford as well as the Blues.

Despite reducing the gap – albeit temporarily – with a 2-0 victory over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Ferdinand is of the opinion that the north London outfit no longer harbour hopes of topping the table.

“The club have got a remit and that is to finish in the top four, it seems, because that is what the last 10 years have told you,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“They finish in the top four and he [Wenger] gets a new contract. So, the priority of the people that run Arsenal is obviously to finish in the top four and not necessarily winning.

“That is how it seems. They’ll be happy. That’s been the way it has been. History tells you that’s the way it goes.”

has been a difficult last few weeks for Arsene Wenger as not only has his side fallen away in the title race, but he’s been forced to watch the last four games from the stands after serving his ban for his actions towards the officials against Burnley last month.

Things are about to get a lot more difficult for the Frenchman in the coming weeks as Arsenal face Bayern Munich in the Champions League and also have trips to non-league Sutton United as well as Liverpool on the horizon.
