Arsenal set to confirm signing of Schalke defender Kolasinac

Arsenal are set to confirm the signing of Schalke left-back Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old is thought to have agreed a five-year deal and is expected to complete his move to Emirates Stadium once his current deal with the Bundesliga side expires on July 1.

Kolasinac’s exit from the Veltins-Arena has been anticipated for weeks, with the club’s fans holding up a banner after the final home game of the season which read: “Six years our crest. Thanks Seo.”

The defender would rival Nacho Monreal for a first-team starting berth and throws further doubt on Kieran Gibbs’ long-term future with the Gunners.

Gibbs has made just 10 league appearances this season and has just over one year left on his current deal. Talks are yet to begin on an extension.

Kolasinac, a Bosnia and Herzegovina international, represents Arsenal’s first summer business and is the clearest hint yet that manager Arsene Wenger will stay on next season.
