Arsenal’s draw with PSG was a fair result despite own goal – Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger labelled his side’s 2-2 draw with Paris Saint- Germain on Wednesday night “a fair result.”

A goal from both teams either side of half-time saw them share the points, giving the French champions the advantage of topping Group A going into the final round of fixtures.

When reflecting, Wenger said both sides deserved to come away from the Emirates with a point.

“When you are 2-1 up and you score an own goal, you’re entitled to think you could have won the game. Overall, the 2-2 is a fair result,” Wenger told his post-match press conference. “I think we improved the intensity in the game. I believe we were committed throughout and dominated periods but the start of the game.”

PSG took the lead through an 18th minute goal from Edinson Cavani, which was cancelled out by an Olivier Giroud penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Own-goals from Marco Verratti and Alex Iwobi in the second period saw the game end in a draw, leaving PSG top of the group.

Arsenal will now need to beat FC Basel in Switzerland to stand any chance of avoiding a tough round of 16 draw, which could see them face the likes of Juventus, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile the Ligue 1 champions, who are pursuing their fifth consecutive league title, host Ludogorets at the Parc des Princes in their final fixture.
