Barcelona announce €13m signing of Cillessen from Ajax

Barcelona have completed the signing of Ajax shot-stopper Jasper Cillessen in a deal worth €13 million (£11.1m) on a five-year deal.

The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to La Liga in recent weeks, with Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo set to join Manchester City for a reported £17 million.

The Netherlands international will come in as cover for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is expected to take the No.1 goalkeeping role following Bravo’s departure.

However, Cillessen’s departure from Amsterdam came around in sour circumstances, after he was left out of Ajax’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Champions League debutants FC Rostov on Wednesday, which meant a 5-2 aggregate defeat.

Cillessen joined Ajax back in 2011 from NEC and has racked up 141 appearances for the club over the last five years.

The goalkeeper really came to the attention of many after a series of impressive performances at the 2014 World Cup, where he shone for the Netherlands under the stewardship of Louis van Gaal.

His form in Brazil that summer prompted speculation he could follow the former Manchester United boss to Old Trafford, something which failed to come to fruition.

Cillessen will be presented at a press conference at 12.30 in Spain.
