Barcelona set club record by going 29 games unbeaten

Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Valencia on Wednesday evening mean that the club have now gone 29 games unbeaten across all competitions, setting a new record in the club’s history.

The Catalans went with a youthful side to take on Gary Neville’s team at the Mestalla, having won the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final 7-0 last week.

Despite the absence of 11 first team players however, Luis Enrique’s men
avoided defeat and have broken the record Barcelona set in 2010/11.

Under Pep Guardiola, Barcelona went 28 games unbeaten that time, before losing to Real Betis in the Copa del Rey in January 2011.

And five years on, the Barcelona side has smashed their own record after their result in the semi-final.

However, Real Madrid still hold the overall Spanish football record. Los Blancos went 34 games unbeaten in 1988/89.

The fixture with Valencia also marked Luis Enrique’s 101st game in charge of the club, during which time he has won 80 matches.

Barcelona’s last loss came in the league, away to Sevilla, on 3rd October when goals from Michael Krohn-Dehli and Vicente Iborra earned Unai Emery’s men a hard-fought victory.

In that game, Barca dominated possession (56%) and created 20 chances to Sevilla’s 11.
