Bayern chairman concerned Ronaldo’s wages could be a threat to Bundesliga

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has expressed concern that Cristiano Ronaldo‘s lucrative new contract could make the Bundesliga less appealing for players.

Ronaldo recently signed a new deal at Real Madrid, with the winger now reportedly receiving over €20 million a season in wages, a figure that Rummenigge believes is extortionate.

As reported by Goal, Rummenigge told Sport Bild: “The Premier League is not the only threat when it comes to high wages, but the same goes for Spain.

“Real Madrid have just renewed with three players and Ronaldo now supposedly earns €20.5m after taxes. There is not even a single player in the Bundesliga who makes that kind of money before taxes!

“There is a clear business model behind that, they do not want their players to leave for England. Florentino Perez hates it when one of his players receives an offer from another club, in particular when such a club comes from England.”

There is little doubt that Ronaldo warrants his status as the highest-paid player in football, with the Portugal international still capable of producing outstanding performances on a regular basis.

While he hasn’t quite been at his scintillating best so far this campaign, Ronaldo has still managed to make a major impact- he has scored five goals in La Liga while he has been successful with 84% of his attempted passes.

Real Madrid’s decision to pay Ronaldo so highly does set a rather dangerous precedent as other players will inevitably demand to receive increased wages following a run of good form now that the overall financial bar has been raised.

However, it is understandable that the Spanish club were so determined to tie Ronaldo down to a new long-term deal given his status as one of the best players in the world.
