Belgium boss Wilmots confirms Batshuayi has had Chelsea medical

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots has confirmed Michy Batshuayi was allowed to leave the club’s training camp to have a medical ahead of his move to Chelsea.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months and, although it initially appeared that his destination would be Tottenham Hotspur, it now seems that Batshuayi will join Chelsea instead to become the first signing of the Antonio Conte era.

As reported by ESPN, Wilmots confirmed that Batshuayi underwent a two-hour medical near Bordeaux and said: “I just ordered the taxi.”

A fast and powerful forward, Batshuayi enjoyed an impressive 2015/16 campaign with Marseille, during which he scored 23 goals in 50 games across all competitions.

Chelsea are certainly in need of an additional attacking option as they currently lack depth in that department, especially with Radamel Falcao and Alexandre Pato having returned to their parent clubs after loan spells.

Diego Costa struggled for consistency at times this season, but when he is at his best the Spain international is capable of causing a multitude of problems for defenders.

Chelsea are also able to call upon youngster Bertrand Traore, who has delivered some encouraging performances, but a further striker is needed, and it seems that Batshuayi will fill that void.
