Bruce Arena says USA’s overall is to win the World Cup

Bruce Arena has revealed that the USA have set themselves the ultimate target of lifting the World Cup.

Arena, who was previously manager of the USA from 1998-2006, has implied that certain simple measures were not in place when Jurgen Klinsmann was at the helm.

The German was sacked on Monday after a hammering by Costa Rica, and Arena is eager to make his mark on the national team yet again after being appointed as his successor.

Arena told FourFourTwo: “We certainly have a goal of one day of winning the World Cup. I think despite the fact that we’ve had a difficult start to qualifying we have a good pool of players and it’s my job to get them organised properly, playing with a passion and energy, letting them understand how were going to play, putting the right players in the right spots.

“Simple things, it sounds simple but it’s not that easy to accomplish in a group setting. But that has to be the job that I have right now. The last two games indicated that we weren’t a team.”

Arena has the best record as boss of the USA with 71 wins from 130 matches, and will take over Klinsmann after leaving his post as LA Galaxy manager.

He led his country to the 2002 World Cup quarter finals in his first spell in charge, and has won five MLS Cups while managing LA Galaxy and DC United.

The United States shocked the world by managing to reach the last 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, progressing to the knockout stages alongside Germany in a group also containing Ghana and Portugal.

However Klinsmann hasn’t been able to direct a convincing qualifying campaign for Russia 2018, as the USA have lost their last two encounters.
