Carragher compares Salah to Barcelona superstar Messi after Tottenham goal

Mohamed Salah’s second goal against Tottenham was reminiscent of Barcelona star Lionel Messi, according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Egyptian, who scored both Liverpool’s goals in a 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday, appeared to win the match with a stunning late strike that left three Tottenham defenders trailing in his wake.

Salah jinked past Ben Davis and Jan Vertonghen with incredibly precise changes of direction before chipping the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from a tight angle.

For Carragher, the style of his dribbling and the deft finish reminded him of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, whose close control is legendary throughout the game.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: ‘The only (other) man who can score that goal is Messi.

‘If you think of Messi scoring goals, that’s what he does in the tight areas and dinks it over the goalkeeper.’

There was equally high praise from Carragher’s co-commentator Graeme Souness, who said there was ‘so much to admire’ about Liverpool’s summer signing from Roma, who now has 21 goals to show from his first season at Anfield.

Souness added: ‘There is so much to admire about this: his strength, his change of direction and his low centre of gravity. If you look at Salah, he can resist a challenge. He looks to have really powerful thighs. He can change direction very quickly.’

Speaking after the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said of his star player: ‘It was a fantastic goal, it was an outstanding goal, it was an outstanding performance.

‘He was a threat the whole 90 minutes that’s true.’
