Cech backs Wenger to succeed as England manager

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech says Arsene Wenger has all the qualities to succeed Roy Hodgson as manager of the England national team.

The Gunners boss has emerged as a shock candidate to fill the current vacancy with the Three Lions after Hodgson stepped down from the position in the immediate aftermath of the shock 2-1 defeat against Iceland in the round of 16 clash at Euro 2016.

Wenger has since refused to rule out the possibility of taking over once his contract with the North London outfit expires next summer and Cech has backed the Frenchman for the role, but added that he expects the 66-year-old to remain at the Emirates Stadium.

“Obviously that is a question for Mr Wenger, if he would like to take this (England) job, but he is someone who has been coaching in England for such a long time, he definitely has the pedigree and the quality,” the Czech Republic international told Sky Sports News.

“He knows the atmosphere, the mentality and knows the expectation and the love England has for football, so obviously this is to his big advantage.

“But I think he is enjoying his time at Arsenal being a club manager, having the day-to-day job and it would be more of a question for him.”

It has been reported that the FA would be willing to wait a year to appoint Wenger, given his reluctance to break his contract with the Gunners, while talk of a caretaker manager to fill in for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers has cooled over the past week.

Other names that have been linked with the post include Leicester City’s title winning manager Claudio Ranieri and Glenn Hoddle, who was in charge of the national side between 1996-1999, while Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce is reportedly the only Englishman being considered for the job.
