Conte grants Diego Costa extra day off while Chelsea teammates return to training

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has handed striker Diego Costa a further day off this week from training, after his teammates returned to Cobham.

Costa has been scintillating form this season for Chelsea and appears to be thriving off working with Conte, who took charge of Chelsea in the summer.

The Spain international has now netted 13 league goals this season – the highest in the Premier League – but there was one downside to his performance at Crystal Palace last week.

The forward was booked at Selhurst Park – his fifth of the season – and that has ruled him out of the Boxing Day clash with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

However, such is Costa’s good form, that the Telegraph now reveals Conte has handed Costa an extra day off this week ahead of Christmas, which is sure to boost the striker’s spirits ahead of signing a new deal.

The former Atletico Madrid man has been negotiating a new deal with Chelsea for a while now and reports this week reveal that Costa has already informed his team-mates that he intends to sign a new £200,000-a-week contract.
