Conte rules out more January transfers despite Chelsea’s Carabao Cup exit at Arsenal

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has insisted he does not need more reinforcements this month despite getting knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Arsenal.

The Blues have been heavily linked with moves for Roma duo Edin Dzeko and Emerson Palmieri, as well as numerous striking options month.

There is no sign of anymore incomings at Stamford Bridge, with Ross Barkley’s £15million move from Everton the only addition in this window.

But, following Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final, Conte reiterated he has his trust in his squad, believing they don’t need further expenditure.

‘I don’t need anything,’ the Italian told Sky Sports when asked about potential signings this month. ‘I’m a coach and I continue to stick with these players.’

Barkley made his bow for the Blues on Wednesday night, coming on in place of Willian in the first half.

It was the England international’s first appearance since turning out for Everton last May at the same venue.

And Conte believes after finally blowing off those cobwebs, the playmaker now has to improve in order to force his way into contention for a starting berth.

‘I think he has a lot of space for improvement and he is working with us. I was forced to make the substitution and he can improve a lot.’

Conte has never won a major cup competition as a manager and the barren spell may well continue following Wednesday’s result.

The manager was left dejected following the tournament exit but believes his side simply did not get a rub of the green at the Emirates.

‘I’m disappointed for the final result,’ Conte said. ‘I must be pleased with all my players.

‘We tried to reach the final we conceded two goals and we were unlucky. Two deflections and these are difficult to see. It’s a pity because we had a good run. A pity for me, my players and the fans.

‘We started very well. A good first half. Second half I saw a lot of balance but when one of your best players is injured it’s not simple.’
