Conte thanks Chelsea fans for sticking by team during ‘bad situation’

Antonio Conte underlined the importance of the travelling Chelsea fans after the Blues came from behind to beat Leicester 4-2 in the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening.

Two Shinji Okazaki goals in the first period at the King Power Stadium put Conte’s men on the back foot and seemingly on course for a second straight defeat.

The Blues, who are not competing in Europe this season, were facing an early exit from the League Cup and the prospect of just two titles left to scrap for with more than eight months remaining in the campaign.

But Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta struck either side of the interval to force extra-time against a Foxes side who lost Marcin Wasilewski in the 89th minute following a petulant swing of the elbow.

The impressive Cesc Fabregas scored a brace in extra-time to see Chelsea through to the fourth round and Conte hailed those who made the journey from west London for inspiring the fightback.

“It’s incredible the support of our fans,” Conte told Chelsea’s official Youtube channel.

“I want to tell them thank you because at 2-0 down they were pushing the team. It’s important because we must stick together in good and bad situations.

“To count on your fans is very important and for this reason I wanted to thank you.”
