Del Piero backs Neymar to win Ballon d’Or

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has backed Barcelona superstar Neymar to one day win the Ballon d’Or, after years of dominance from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Neymar has enjoyed yet another fantastic season for Luis Enrique’s side, netting 21 goals in 27 La Liga game so far this term.

The Brazil international, who joined Barcelona in 2013 from Santos and has since upped his performances to another level, is competing with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi for the Pichichi award this season.

While Neymar is unlikely to catch up with the three aforementioned players in that department, many have backed the forward to one day knock Messi and Ronaldo off their perch in the race for the Ballon d’Or.

Del Piero certainly agrees with that opinion and believes it is only a matter of time before he becomes the first Ballon d’Or winner aside from Messi and Ronaldo.

“Neymar is young, he’s still a young player, Messi and Ronaldo are at the top of their career,” Del Piero told Goal.

“He has the future in front of him and by the way he has a great chance to win the Ballon d’Or in the future. Definitely yes.

“[Messi or Ronaldo?] I have never answered this question in my life because it’s too difficult to choose and too easy to choose at the same time.

“I can close my eyes and pick the one who’s the best for me, both are incredible.”

Neymar’s Barcelona side are currently firing on all cylinders and while their defeat in El Clasico last week left plenty to be desired, they are still six points clear at the top of La Liga.

Enrique’s side also have a Copa del Rey final to look forward to, while they lead Atletico Madrid 2-1 from the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
