Diego Costa: Morata is a great player

Diego Costa believes Alvaro Morata, the man Chelsea signed to replace him, was a bargain.

The young Spanish striker arrived from Real Madrid in a £60million deal earlier this summer.

He was signed to replace Costa, who Antonio Conte has decided no longer has a role to play at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea manager sent his leading goalscorer from last season a text to inform him he was free to leave.

While Costa is in Brazil, refusing to return to training with the reserves, Morata bagged a goal on his Premier League debut.

Costa believes Chelsea can expect many more from his international team-mate.

‘Alvaro Morata is a great player,’ Costa told the Daily Mail. ‘He had a great season in Madrid and actually with the way this crazy transfer market is, I think they got a good price for a young and talented forward.’

While giving his support to Morata, Costa was not happy with how his arrival at Stamford Bridge came about.

‘He will triumph at Chelsea, but there are ways of going about it. You don’t do it by text message. You should be honest and direct to someone’s face.’

He continued: ‘I was with the Spain national team, alone in my room, when it came through. It was a shock to get it like that. I was showing it to my team-mates and they could not believe how he had done it.

‘I was angry at the time. Now I am more calm. I have not deleted the message. If people accuse me of lying, I can show them. It was clear, saying that he didn’t count on me and wishing me the best for the future. Full stop.’
