Europa League and FA Cup more important to Man Utd than fourth place – Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits winning a trophy this season is more important getting fourth spot in the Premier League.

The Dutch tactician has rejuvenated his team in recent weeks and they are looking to make it five out five when they face West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Sunday.

Van Gaal’s team’s good form has put them back into contention for a place in the top four this season and they are only outside the Champions League places on goal difference.

Whilst Manchester City, who are fourth, have a game in hand over United, many feel the Red Devils could make the Champions League places.

However, Van Gaal admits that is not exactly his priority and he instead says he wants to win a job, with the Red Devils still in the Europa League and FA Cup.

“I think everybody wants to win, but they cannot always win – that is the strength of the Premier League,” Van Gaal said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. “This is also why the league is popular in the world.

“A title (Europa League/FA Cup) is more important than fourth position.

“It is still our aim [to finish in the top four]. Our aim is also to win a trophy – that would be fantastic for Manchester United and the fans. Of course, Manchester United has not won the Europa League but also the [last] FA Cup is many years ago so that would be fantastic also.”

Manchester United fans may not to be too happy to hear that, but the club has not won a trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

The Red Devils won the Premier League title that campaign, but are some way away from that sort of standard at the moment.
