Ferdinand: “Weak” Arsenal are a reflection of their manager

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has criticised Arsenal and manager Arsene Wenger following the Gunners’ “weak performance” in their 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich last night.

Arsenal were annihilated at the Allianz Arena and now face the prospect of exiting the Champions League at the Last 16 stage for the seventh season in succession.

Arsenal were woeful defensively, especially after Laurent Koscielny succumbed to injury, and they offered little going forwards.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: “Teams are usually a reflection of their manager. And that was a weak performance. A lack of fight. A lack of direction. A lack of leadership in the team.”

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown said: “It’s almost embarrassing. Out-classed. Out-played.”

Bayern, however, were excellent and took full advantage of Arsenal’s weaknesses, with the likes of Arjen Robben, Thiago Alcantara and Robert Lewandowski all hugely impressive for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

The sides meet at Emirates Stadium next month but this tie appears all but over.

It appears that Arsenal will once again be eliminated from the Champions League in the Last 16 and, with the club’s hopes of winning the Premier League title appearing distant the likelihood is that this will be another disappointing season for the club.
