Ferguson: I made so many players but Ronaldo made himself

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player he ever managed.

The Portuguese spent six years at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, before moving on to Real Madrid – where he has continued to be one of the best players in the world.

Ferguson credits the 31-year-old with making himself in to the player who has won the Ballon d’Or three times – rather than his coaching.

‘[Cristiano] Ronaldo is a perfect example of someone who made himself,’ the Scot said after picking up the Walther Bensemann award.

‘It’s easy for me to say, ‘yeah I made Ronaldo’. Many coaches might say I made this player and I made that player, but Ronaldo made himself.

‘We just gave him the tools and the platform to excel.’

He added: ‘He was a fantastic player, he was the best.

‘We had fantastic players in [Paul] Scholes, [Ryan] Giggs, and [Eric] Cantona. We had some fantastic footballers, but Ronaldo was just something else.’

Ronaldo won three Premier Leagues, one FA Cup, and a Champions League with the Red Devils, as well as the first Ballon d’Or of his career.
