Griezmann ‘waiting to see’ Champions League status before discussing Man United move

Manchester United’s chances of signing Antoine Griezmann this summer reportedly hinge on the club securing their place in next season’s Champions League.

United’s interest in Griezmann has been the source of speculation for a number of months with the Frenchman widely claimed to be on Jose Mourinho’s transfer wishlist, as he plans a revamp of his side.

The Portuguese boss seemingly sees the forward as the right man to lead United’s push for the Premier League next season, but the Daily Mirror reports that Griezmann’s potential move to Old Trafford comes with the condition of Champions League football.

Atletico Madrid officials have told the Red Devils that the Frenchman will only discuss a potential transfer if and when their status in Europe’s top competition is confirmed, the source suggests.

A draw against Swansea City on Sunday leaves United outside the top four by one point with four games to go, but another route to the Champions League is plausible with Mourinho’s side in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Winning the tournament would give the Premier League club a trophy and also access to Europe’s elite competition next season.

Griezmann has netted 16 goals in La Liga this campaign, which gives the 26-year-old a better tally than all of United’s players bar Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Atletico No.7 has been tipped to take Wayne Rooney’s role as the link between attack and midfield, and as the statistics from this season show he would be a worthy investment in that regard.
