Guardiola admits It’s impossible for Man City to achieve big targets this season

Pep Guardiola believes that it’s “impossible” for Manchester City to achieve their big targets now this season, following their dramatic 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

City’s Premier League form has faltered in recent weeks, winning four and losing four of their previous eight games, the latest of which was their disastrous 4-0 defeat at Everton last weekend. With their title aspirations slowly ebbing away, Guardiola’s men desperately needed to get back on track on Saturday evening.

The Citizens took on Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs side at the Etihad looking
to bounce back from their drubbing on Merseyside, knowing that another losswould surely end their title-challenge. However they stormed out of the blocks, causing the north Londoners no-end of problems in the final third.

A quickfire double from Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne in the second half left City in a commanding position, but Spurs fought back through Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min to draw level. Prior to the equaliser, Raheem Sterling was pushed over in the box by Kyle Walker but didn’t win a penalty, with Son scoring seconds later.

“We created a lot of chances, it’s what has happened all season,” Guardiola told BT Sport post-match. “The right decisions from the referees are always against us. We are not going to achieve big targets, it’s impossible. We will try. We create too much and we get nothing.”

City have scored 43 goals and conceded 28 in their 22 Premier League fixtures this season, with a shot accuracy of 47%, as they sit fifth on 43 points, 12 behind leaders Chelsea.

Next up for them is an away clash at Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, before taking on West Ham United at the London Stadium.
