Guardiola is better at marketing than coaching – Ex-Brazil boss

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is better at marketing than coaching, according to former Brazil boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

Guardiola has made a wonderful start to life in Manchester, winning his first 10 games in all competitions to take City into the Champions League group stages and to the top of the Premier League.

But despite his success so far with City and previous clubs Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the Catalan coach has been surrounded by allegations that his success comes from the nature of the sides he manages, not his own influence.

The 45-year-old has won six domestic league titles, four domestic cups and two Champions League titles in the last eight years, but Luxemburgo claims he still has a lot to prove.

“Pep Guardiola is better at marketing than coaching. He won a lot of titles at Barcelona, but Luis Enrique has done the same,” he told Fox Sport.

“Guardiola went to Bayern Munich, he prepared, he learned the language and he didn’t achieve the same as Jupp Heynckes, who won the treble at 70 years old.

“He [Ancelotti] was a champion at [AC] Milan, [Real] Madrid… I think that, for Guardiola to prove he’s better, he will have to win with Manchester City.”

Guardiola has been one of the most influential coaches of the modern era, with his Barcelona side dominating European football with their possession- based style.

Their exploits brought them two Champions League triumphs – in 2009 and 2011 – before Guardiola headed to Bayern to test himself further.

He won three consecutive Bundesliga titles with the Bavarian side, but failed in Europe’s elite competition, which ultimately meant he was judged harshly in some quarters.

So far his start at City could hardly have gone much better, despite the recent setbacks in the shape of a 3-3 draw with Celtic in the Champions League and a 2-0 loss to Premier League title rivals Tottenham.

Following the international break, City take on Everton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday looking to maintain their lead at the top of the league table.
