Guardiola: I congratulate Real Madrid, but Barcelona always bounce back

Real Madrid may have won this year’s Champions League, and deservedly so according to Pep Guardiola, but the Manchester City coach believes they must avoid becoming complacent.

Pointing to Barcelona’s ability to overcome adversity, the Catalan was confident that his former team would soon challenge them in Spain and in Europe once again.

“I congratulate Real Madrid because they were the worthy winner of the Champions League, but I would also tell them not to become overconfident because Barcelona always bounce back,” he said during a golf day organised by the Johan Cruyff Foundation.

For the Blaugrana, they hope that Ernesto Valverde is the man to take them back to the top and Guardiola believes the former Athletic Club coach has what it takes.

“He is a very good coach and a good friend,” he said.

“Barcelona have made a good choice.”

As for Zinedine Zidane, Guardiola was full of praise for the man who has won the Champions League twice in 17 months.

“He is a great coach and, as a player, he was on another level,” he said.

“I am happy for him because he has done an excellent job.”
