Guardiola congratulates Liverpool for joining Man City in top four spots

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has congratulated Liverpool for qualifying for the Champions League.

Liverpool secured their place in the Premier League top four and a chance at qualifying for the Champions League group-stages by besting Middlesbrough 3-0 on the final day of the season.

It’s only the second time in eight seasons that the Reds have finished in the top four in the top flight and Jurgen Klopp’s side will join Guardiola’s men in Europe’s elite competition next campaign.

It was a tight race for the final Champions League spot with Arsenal still in the race heading into Sunday’s action, and at one point the Gunners were besting Liverpool to fourth having taken an early lead over Everton.

But, with Liverpool claiming the Champions League place, Guardiola has offered his well wishes to City’s Premier League rivals who have all finished in the top four.

Guardiola told Sky Sports: “First of all congratulations to Chelsea – the champions of the Premier League. To the outstanding performances of Tottenham.

“Of course we are so glad to be third. Every season will be tougher and tougher to qualify for the Champions League. Arsenal could not be in the Champions League so it’s always complicated.

“Of course congratulations to Liverpool.”
