Guardiola in tears after bowing out of Bayern with German Cup victory

Pep Guardiola was in tears as his Bayern Munich side beat Borussia Dortmund on penalties to win the German Cup in the Spaniard’s final game in charge of Die Roten.

The two sides could not muster a goal between them after 120 minutes of football, and it was left to Douglas Costa to secure the trophy after Sven Bender and Sokratis both missed from the spot for Dortmund.

Guardiola will now leave Bayern to join Manchester City ahead of next season.

He signs off from the Bundesliga champions having won the title in each of his three season in Munich, also collecting two German Cups.

For Dortmund, it was a similar tale; they have now lost the last three German Cup finals, as well as suffering defeat in the Champions League final in 2013 and finishing runners-up in three of the last four seasons.

It leaves Thomas Tuchel’s side without a major honour since their own league and cup double in 2012.

Mats Hummels’ last appearance for BVB before moving to Bayern ended in injury as he was replaced by Matthias Ginter after 78 minutes.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a golden opportunity to win the game in closing stages of the 90 minutes for Dortmund, but could not divert Lukasz Piszczek’s cross goalward.
