Hamann: Mourinho will damage Manchester United like he did Chelsea

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann feels Jose Mourinho could become a toxic presence at Manchester United, just as he did at the end of his time with previous club Chelsea.

The Portuguese tactician took over at Old Trafford this summer after the departure of Louis van Gaal, but has not got off to the best of starts with his new team.

United have been in a difficult transitional period ever since the retirement of long-serving and legendary figure Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, but Hamann feels Mourinho is going to prove the wrong choice for the Red Devils.

The German has hit out at Mourinho’s tendency to put himself ahead of the good of his players, and expects this will harm United like it harmed Chelsea during their disastrous start to last season, which led to his sacking in December.

‘It was a brave call (for Chelsea) to get rid of Mourinho, but it was the right call as his behaviour at the club left them with no choice,’ Hamann explained.

‘With Mourinho it was all about him, not the players. Football is a team game and he has the same problem at Manchester United now.’
