Henry: Chelsea players had a point to prove to Mourinho

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes that some Chelsea players had a point to prove to former manager Jose Mourinho on his first return to Stamford Bridge since his dismissal last December.

Most of the players in Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday played under Mourinho and were in the squad that failed to defend their Premier League title last term.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Henry said: “Those guys wanted to prove something to Mourinho, the guys that were maybe not in favour of him last year. Maybe he dropped some, maybe he wasn’t happy with some. I think today they wanted to prove a point to him, the whole league, themselves and the fans.”

Eden Hazard in particular was one player who felt the wrath of his Portuguese boss for his lack of defensive work and the incident that led to Dr. Eva Carneiro’s departure from the club, but his form improved drastically once Mourinho left.

This season the Belgian captain has already scored four Premier League goals, while last term he didn’t net until April 24th when he got a brace against Bournemouth.

Of the four scorers, it was only N’Golo Kante who hadn’t worked under the 53 -year-old. Diego Costa, Gary Cahill and Hazard were all part of the team that won the Premier League with him in 2015.
