Henry Nwosu: How referee gave Cameroun 1988 AFCON

Former Super Eagles captain Henry Nwosu has rolled back the years to reveal his agony over Nigeria’s controversial 1-0 loss to Cameroun at the final of the 1988 African Cup of Nations in Morocco.

In an exclusive interview published in the latest edition of Complete Football magazine, Nwosu faulted Mauritanian referee Idrissa Sarr’s decision to disallow his headed goal which could have given Nigeria the lead in the game.

He said: “I think it was a stolen victory (for Cameroun) because we didn’t deserve to lose the game. If you see a replay of that game today, just watch it carefully. It was a perfectly weighted ball that came from the flanks and I jumped to head it into the net. I did not push anybody and nobody obstructed me. When the ball bounced in the net, I raced away to celebrate but when I turned around I saw that my teammates were not following me so I knew something was wrong. I went to the referee and you can see me asking him what was wrong with that goal.”
