Hiddink: Mourinho will deliver ‘instant success’ at Manchester United

Outgoing Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink believes Jose Mourinho will bring success and silverware to Manchester United despite the “tough” demands of the Premier League.

United appointed Mourinho as their new manager on a three-year deal last month, six months after the Portuguese coach was sacked by Chelsea following the club’s worst start to a season since 1979.

Hiddink was brought in to steady the ship at Stamford Bridge once Mourinho had departed and the Dutchman went on to lift the Blues from near the relegation zone to a 10th-placed finish in the league, although he couldn’t steer the club to any trophies.

Hiddink will now be replaced by Italy manager Antonio Conte at Chelsea while Mourinho will begin his new challenge as boss of United and, despite the likes of Pep Guardiola arriving to manage in the top flight next term, Hiddink believes Mourinho will thrive at Old Trafford.

“Mourinho is a coach who can deliver a performance, a success, an instant success,” Hiddink told BBC Radio 5 live.

“The competition is tough in England especially, but big clubs have to be there in the top three, top four always.”
