Jenas: Moses proves Conte doesn’t pick players based on reputation

Jermaine Jenas has praised Antonio Conte for handing Victor Moses the chance to prosper within Chelsea‘s team, after a string of loan spells for the winger.

Moses has been a Chelsea player since 2012 after making the move from Wigan Athletic, but has regularly found himself trying to impress at other Premier League clubs. He has been out to Stoke City, Liverpool and most recently West Ham United.

The Nigerian very rarely wasted an opportunity to be productive in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday and was a threat on the wing and when drifting into central areas. He topped off an authoritative display with a brilliantly executed finish after Nathaniel Chalobah’s deft back heel.

Jenas said, as reported by Yahoo: “Meanwhile, he’s had a good look at the rest of Chelsea’s squad and decided what he wants and needs. Victor Moses, for example, has played for everyone except Chelsea over the past few seasons, but Conte is using him as a wing-back with impressive results. It shows he is a manager who is prepared to give everyone a chance – he doesn’t go by reputation.

“Doing that at a club like Chelsea can be tough, but it tells the players they are dealing with a strong character who believes in what he sees on the training pitch. For a player like Moses, that’s a blessing.”

Conte chose to play Moses as a wing-back along with Marcos Alonso on Saturday and both players had plenty of license to get forward and join attacks, but Chelsea were up against a Leicester team who offered very little offensively while Ranieri may have had his focus on the Champions League.

The 25-year-old has almost unrivalled speed and can be great with the ball at his feet while possessing a good appreciation of his fellow forwards, but if he continues to play as a wing back he is likely to be exposed by better opposition wingers.

There’s no doubt that Moses can be an adequate wide player for Chelsea but the fact that he is not a defensive minded player could be outlined in weeks to come.
