Klopp: It would make sense for Liverpool to now beat Tottenham

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has claimed that it would “make sense” for his side to beat Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday given that they have a tendency to save their best performances for when they face high-profile opponents.

The Reds are in the midst of a miserable run of form that has seen them win just one of their last ten games across all competitions, and their frustration increased with a 2-0 defeat against Hull City yesterday.

However, Klopp has backed his side to respond when they host Tottenham. As reported by ESPN, Klopp said: “In a few days we have another opportunity to play football and we can show then that we are ready for all the other games, because it’s Tottenham, who are a top team in the league.

“I think it would make sense for us to play our best in this game, and then we have to prove the other thing [that Liverpool can beat the lesser sides] later in the season.

“We have to show it’s not like this. This week we had a really good performance [against Chelsea] but obviously we didn’t build on it. So we will have to take the criticism from everywhere.”

Liverpool have been woeful of late, with Klopp’s side having lacked dynamism going forwards while they have appeared especially vulnerable at the back.

Given that they are 13 points adrift of leaders Chelsea, any feint hopes of winning the Premier League title have surely evaporated for Liverpool, for whom the focus is now on attempting to secure a top four finish, something which certainly isn’t an inevitability.
