Liverpool confirm Emre Can will be out for more than one month

Liverpool have confirmed that Emre Can will miss four to six weeks after rupturing ankle ligaments.

The 22-year-old’s season could therefore be over after suffering the injury in the remarkable 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund on Thursday evening in the Europa League.

Liverpool’s official website confirmed the unfortunate news, which will rule Can out of Liverpool’s Europa League semi-final tie with Villarreal later this month.

When asked about the injury at today’s press conference, Jurgen Klopp said: “It’s not the best news. We will try everything to get him back.”

This could also have a devastating effect on Can’s possibility of playing for Germany at the European Championships in France this summer.

Can signed for Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last season and he has enjoyed an impressive campaign on Merseyside this term, playing 29 Premier League games and creating 31 chances.

The German midfielder can also play in defence but he has been rarely utilised there this season, largely operating in a box-to-box role instead.

With only seven games remaining in the Premier League for Liverpool, Can is likely to be replaced by Joe Allen in Klopp’s first-team.

Liverpool’s next game in the top-flight sees them face a plucky Bournemouth team away at Dean Court on Sunday afternoon.
