Arsene Wenger is adamant there will be no director of football at Arsenal while he is manager.
Borussia Dortmund director of football Michael Zorc has been approached about taking a job in the Premier League, according to the Telegraph, citing Arsenal’s interest in the German.
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is keen to appoint a senior figure to either work with Wenger or a new manager if the Frenchman leaves, according to the report.
Former Arsenal player Marc Overmars, currently director of football at Ajax, said in April he was on a list of potential names for the role at Arsenal, but Wenger ruled out any talk of the club creating the position at the Emirates.
“No, director of football, I don’t know what it means,” Wenger said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing
Southampton on Wednesday.
“Is it someone who stands on the road and directs the players left and right? I never understand what it means, director of football.”
Wenger has not yet confirmed whether he will stay at the Gunners beyond the end of his current contract, which expires at the end of the season, but the Frenchman insisted the technical structure of the club will not change as long as he is in charge.
“I’m manager of Arsenal and as long as I am manager I will decide what happens on the technical front,” he added. “That’s it.”
Wenger was once again asked if he would clarify his own position at the club, having previously said he would reveal his decision in either March or April but simply replied “no” when probed on whether or not there were any developments.
