Barcelona boss Luis Enrique admits that he’s not over the moon in regards to setting a new club record this week, insisting it’s all just “numbers”.
The Blaugrana’s 1-1 draw against Valencia on Wednesday evening means that the club have now gone 29 games unbeaten across all competitions, setting a new record in their history.
Pep Guardiola had previously held the record with 28 games, and it seemed as though at one point both him and Enrique would have to share that gong as Barcelona struggled to overcome Valencia.
Alvaro Negredo gave Gary Neville’s side an early lead against what was an extremely depleted Barcelona squad, with Enrique using a number of youngsters due to his side leading 7-0 from the first-leg.
However, the Catalan youngsters never gave up, as Wilfrid Kaptoum steered a low cross into the back of the net with just five minutes left to help his side progress to the Copa del Rey final, winning 8-1 on aggregate.
The draw ensured that Barcelona’s record was still intact, and in turn they overtook Guardiola’s record-breaking side.
“The team looked very complete even though I tried out some different positions,” Enrique told the club’s official website.
“We had no out-and-out centre forward, but with Rakitic playing in the middle of the attack things worked well. The record is just numbers. So let’s see if those numbers are good enough to bring us titles.”
Barcelona will almost certainly see all their star players return to league action this coming Sunday, as they play host to Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou.
Enrique’s side are top of La Liga on 54 points, three ahead of Real Madrid, although they do have a game in hand over Los Blancos.
