Marcos Alonso explains why he’s so impressed with Chelsea team-mate Victor Moses

Marcos Alonso has praised teammate Victor Moses for the ‘amazing job’ he is doing for Chelsea this season.

Both players have been integral to Chelsea’s success – they sit 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League – and have been near ever-presents in the wing-back positions since manager Antonio Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation in October.

Both 26, the pair were seen as something of journeymen – having struggled to hold down a regular place at the various top-flight clubs they have played for – but it’s been a different story this year.

While Alonso has played at wing-back before, he told Sky Sports he has been seriously impressed with the way Moses has adapted to a new position on the opposite flank.

‘You have to run a lot more because you have to attack like a winger and defend like a full-back’ the Spaniard said.

‘You have to pick the best time to go up and maybe have a rest at some point during the game to be the first to defend when the team is not having full control of the game.’

Alonso, who came through the youth academy at Real Madrid, had spells at Bolton, Fiorentina and Sunderland before moving to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Moses had spells on loan at Liverpool, Stoke and West Ham before being recalled at the same time.

Two players whose careers were on the wane are more than likely to end up with Premier League winners’ medals this season.

‘Some days when I see that he is attacking more, I will stay more to cover and sometimes when I push more, he covers at the back,’ Alonso added of his partner.

‘He is doing an amazing job, because I think for me, it is easier that I used to play in this position before but for him it is something new and he is doing a fantastic job there.’

Alonso may be humble about his own exploits, but there’s no doubting the pair have both been doing an ‘amazing job’ for Chelsea this season.
