Martial four Man United goals away from triggering €10m Monaco clause

Manchester United are now just four Anthony Martial goals away from owing Monaco a further €10 million.

Martial signed for the Red Devils in a surprisingly pricey transfer last summer, joining from the Ligue 1 giants on deadline day.

The versatile forward instantly cemented his place in the side with three goals from his first two Premier League appearances, while winning the 2015 Golden Boy award.

Under new manager Jose Mourinho, though, Martial has generally disappointed, playing in just 112 of the last 720 Premier League minutes.

However, on Wednesday evening, the France international played a crucial role in the Red Devils’ EFL Cup tie against West Ham United at Old Trafford.

Having been pegged back to 1-1 by the Hammers before half-time, Martial struck twice in the second half.

Those goals took his Man United tally to 21 goals across all competitions – and tantalisingly close to a lucrative clause in his contract for Monaco.

In leaked documents from last season (via the Daily Mirror), it was revealed that the teenager would trigger a €10m payment once he reached 25 goals for his new club.

The North West giants’ hectic December schedule could lend itself to a payment very soon, with seven potential appearances to come before the end of the year.

Everton will host Man United in the Premier League this weekend, before Mourinho’s men travel to Zorya Luhansk to conclude the Europa League group stage.
