Mbappe: “Real Madrid have been trying to sign me since I was 14”

Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe has revealed Real Madrid have been after him since he turned 14.

The 18-year-old French international has taken European football by storm in the season just gone and consequently been linked with a host of clubs across Europe.

One of those is the Champions League winners, who are long-time admirers, with Mbappe adding he’s not sure where he will be playing beyond the summer.

“Real Madrid? They have been trying to sign me since I was 14,” he told Canal+.

“We’re going to go away with the family and we’ll think about what’s going to happen.

“We have to sort it out, see what happens with the club too, because I’m under contract with a club, I’m not free. We’ll see what’s happening.”

A graduate of Monaco’s academy, Mbappe – who made his debut in the 2015/16 campaign – featured across 44 matches this season, scoring 26 goals and creating a further 14.

His stellar performances earned him a call-up to the French national team and to date Mbappe has earned three caps with his latest coming against England in Paris on Tuesday evening.

It’s been recently reported by French outlet RMC that Real Madrid, the record 12-time European champions, are prepared to make Mbappe the world’s most expensive football surpassing the £89m Manchester United – who are also keeping tabs on the striker – paid for compatriot Paul Pogba.

If he does join he’ll become the 13th Frenchman to represent Los Blancos with international teammate Raphaël Varane and Karim Benzema currently part of Zinedine Zidane’s first team squad.

Arsenal also hold an interest in the player, with Arsene Wenger having on multiple occasions revealed past attempts to sign Mbappe and recently even offering him some advice on choosing his next club.
