Merson: Arsenal will sack Wenger if they lose to Hull City

Paul Merson believes Arsenal would be forced to sack Arsene Wenger if the Gunners were beaten by relegation-battlers Hull City this weekend.

Wenger’s position at the club has come under-fire after his side lost two games in the space of five days to fall 12 points adrift of Chelsea.

The Gunners, fourth in the top-flight, appear to be in a real battle to secure a top-four finish with Liverpool and revitalised Manchester United within touching distance.

Wenger’s side welcome Hull to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and Merson insists it is imperative for the north London outfit to return to winning ways.

He told Sky Sports: ‘This is typical Arsenal. They will win 3-0, everything will be great again and Arsene Wenger will be the best manager in the world.

‘The pressure is on, though, as if they lose this game I don’t see how he can keep his job.

‘It would be that toxic that I couldn’t see him staying.

‘Hull are doing very well but Arsenal tend to beat these teams.’

Hull are one point from safety in the Premier League after an encouraging run under new boss Marco Silva.

The Tigers held Manchester United to a goalless draw at Old Trafford at the start of the month, before sealing a stunning win over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool last weekend.
