Messi aiming to become the world’s best free-kick specialist

In Lionel Messi’s repertoire, he has a high success rate from dead balls, particularly with the devastating accuracy he has demonstrated from free- kicks.

It seems certain that the Argentine will go on to become the best free-kick taker in the world based on the last week’s evidence, if he isn’t already.

Both during the first leg of Barcelona’s Copa del Rey clash against Athletic Club at San Mames and their LaLiga encounter at Villarreal, he popped up with unstoppable free-kicks.

Not content with those, he continued the streak by extending his run from dead balls to three games with another magnificent free-kick in the second leg against the Bilbao outfit.

With his third in as many games, there is a serious case to be made that given his sniper-like accuracy, there is no better free-kick taker in the world than Barcelona’s No. 10, who already has three in 2017 and already looks set to break his 2016 record of seven.

In addition, there also appears to be something about the red and white stripes of Athletic that bring out the best in Messi in this regard.

He has now scored four goals against them directly from free-kicks, his favoured victim in that regard alongside Sevilla.
