Mkhitaryan: Playing for a great club like Man United honours my father’s memory

Manchester United signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan has revealed joining the Red Devils is a “dream come true”.

Mkhitaryan has become Jose Mourinho’s third signing of the summer, a day after giving his first press conference as United manager.

The Armenian attacking midfielder had a stunning final season at Borussia Dortmund as they finished second in the Bundesliga season. He scored 11 goals and created 82 chances, assisting 15 goals which was the most in the German top flight.

After Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan has become United’s third big signing this summer and he has admitted it is a dream come true.

Speaking to the club’s website the 27-year-old said: ‘I am very proud to join Manchester United, this move is a dream come true for me.

‘I am excited to play for a club with such an illustrious history and hope to be part of it for a long time. I thank the trust the club and Jose Mourinho have put in me.

‘Everyone was waiting for this transfer deal and I’m very happy that everyone can be proud of me because it’s an honour for me to be the first Armenian in the Premier League, and I will try to keep their expectation. I think it’s one of the biggest [clubs in the world for Armenians].

‘Finally, I believe playing for such a great club honours my father’s memory, and the inspiration and drive he gave to me when I was young.

‘When he was playing, I was too young to fully understand football but, after he passed away, my dream was to become a football player. I was thinking to continue the job he did and hopefully I am on my way.

‘I’m very excited, it’s a big opportunity for me and a new challenge for me and I will do my best. I couldn’t reject this offer and I’m joining one of the biggest clubs in the world.

‘Everyone knows it’s (the Premier League) one of the biggest championships in the world and I’m very happy to be part of it,’ he added.

Mkhitaryan spent three years at Borussia Dortmund and was initially being strongly linked to Liverpool.

His final campaign at the German club was by far his best though, scoring 11 times and assisting 15 goals, which was enough to attract United.

Only three players in the whole league completed more take ons than the Armenian, who is sure to bring an enormous amount of quality to the Red Devils’ attack.
