Mourinho backs Rashford to break Rooney’s goalscoring record

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes Marcus Rashford could one day break Wayne Rooney‘s goalscoring record at the club.

Rooney scored in Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over Reading in the FA Cup third round on Saturday to join Sir Bobby Charlton on 249 goals.

Meanwhile, Rashford netted twice that afternoon against Jaap Stam’s side to take his tally to 14 goals in 43 games across all competitions for the Red Devils.

Whilst the 19-year-old is still over 200 goals away from Charlton and Rooney, Mourinho believes Rashford is on the right path to greatness and could one day surpass the two aforementioned legends.

“Marcus, he is 19,” Mourinho said, as reported by Sky Sports. “If he plays at Manchester United until the end of his career, maybe Marcus can do it, but Rooney scored a lot of goals.

“I don’t know the distances, really, but I think the ones that are close to the record are players that have left United already. So, especially in modern football, I see it as being really difficult.”

Rashford’s first goal on Saturday was his first for Manchester United since September, after the academy graduate suffered his first real goal drought for the club.

Rashford has three goals in his 16 league games this season and will be hoping to now really kick-start his campaign after his brace on the weekend.
