Mourinho: Why I brought on Fellaini instead of Rashford against Liverpool

Jose Mourinho has revealed his thinking behind bringing on Marouane Fellaini instead of Marcus Rashford in Manchester United‘s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

The Red Devils found themselves trailing at home to Liverpool on Sunday thanks to a James Milner penalty and with one substitution left the logical choice for the Red Devils seemed to bring on striker Rashford.

However in the 76th minute, Mourinho opted to bring Fellaini into the mix and the decision proved crucial with the Belgian playing a role in his side’s 84th-minute equaliser, nodding against the post before Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed home.

Mourinho has now explained why he decided to play Fellaini over Rashford and points towards Liverpool’s defensive set-up, stating his belief that the powerful midfielder was a better option to rattle the Reds’ back-line.

Mourinho told Sky Sports after the match: ” I had Rashford to play, it was between Rashford and Marouane.

“I felt Liverpool were playing really defensive so I looked to the bench. I decided to go with Marouane and Zlatan to put pressure on the Liverpool defence.”

The result leaves United sixth in the table, four points outside of the top four and 12 points away from league leaders Chelsea.
