Mourinho confirms Rooney will miss St. Etienne trip

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Phil Jones and Wayne Rooney are likely to miss Manchester United’s clash with Saint-Etienne in the Europa League on Wednesday night.

The pair did not feature for the Red Devils as Mourinho’s men secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup by beating Blackburn 2-1 at Ewood Park on Sunday afternoon.

Mourinho also opted to rest David De Gea and Antonio Valencia for Sunday’s game as the Red Devils secured their progress to set up a last-eight showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next month.

The Portuguese coach was asked for the latest Manchester United team news after the Red Devils’ win on Sunday and he provided the following update at his post-match news conference at Ewood Park.

Mourinho told reporters: “De Gea was rested. Rooney is injured. Jones is injured. I don’t think they will recover [to face Saint-Etienne on Wednesday].

“Valencia was rested but Rooney and Jones haven’t trained with the team yet so I don’t think they will be there for Wednesday.”

Manchester United are looking to break back into the top four this season after their fifth-placed finish in the Premier League under Louis van Gaal last term.
