Mourinho set to sign new Man United deal to keep him at Old Trafford until 2021

Jose Mourinho is close to signing a contract extension at Manchester United to stay in charge at Old Trafford beyond the end of next season.

United sources have confirmed that talks are progressing well and Mourinho is expected to sign his new deal before the end of the month.

The Portuguese coach is halfway through a three-year deal after taking over from Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2016. The new two-year contract would tie him to United until 2021 with the option of a further 12 months.

Doubts have been raised over Mourinho’s future at Old Trafford after he publicly flirted with Paris Saint-Germain in October and more recently questioned United’s ability to match Manchester City in the transfer market.

The 54-year-old has fuelled the speculation by preferring to live in a hotel during his time in Manchester while his wife and children remain in London.

However, United have underlined their ambition to match City by outbidding their rivals for Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez, and are expected to make another attempt to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid in the summer.

The club’s hierarchy have been sufficiently happy with a coach who won three trophies in his first season to offer Mourinho an extension, confident that he is capable of taking United back to the top of English football.
