Nasri: I don’t know why Arsenal have struggled to win titles

Samir Nasri admitted that he doesn’t know why Arsenal have struggled to win titles in recent years, citing their move to the Emirates as a potential factor.

Nasri spent three years in north London before moving to Manchester City in 2011, failing to lift any silverware under Arsene Wenger in that time. The Gunners were in the midst of a serious trophy drought that eventually lasted nine years, with their previous honour being the 2005 FA Cup.

Arsenal’s 2014 FA Cup triumph ended their long wait for success, while they retained the trophy the following year, but the club are still without a Premier League title since 2004, from their “Invincibles” season. Wenger’s men have come close on a number of occasions after that, but haven’t been able to sustain the required form.

With the club still very much in this season’s Premier League title-race, Nasri, now on loan at Sevilla from City, was asked why his former side have struggled to secure more success.

“I do not know,” the French playmaker responded to Onze Mondial. “I do not know why. We must also take into account the fact that when I was in Arsenal, we did not fight on equal terms with Chelsea or Manchester United. Arsenal made the choice to move to the Emirates Stadium, so there was the stadium credit.

“The bosses of the club have always wanted to have healthy finances, they never wanted to go into debt. So they obviously did not recruit like the others. Since I left, they have won two Cups. They are trophies and all trophies are good to take.”

Arsenal have scored 44 goals and conceded 22 in their 20 Premier League fixtures this season, creating 232 chances, as they sit fifth on 41 points, one outside the top four.

Next up for them is an away clash at Swansea City on Saturday afternoon, before taking on Burnley at the Emirates.
