Neville: I would love Tottenham to catch Chelsea and win the Premier League

Gary Neville admits he would love for Tottenham Hotspur to catch Chelsea in the race for the title this season, whilst Jamie Carragher says it would be a “travesty” if Spurs fail to win a trophy.

Spurs have closed the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea to just four points with six games to play, after the Blues lost at Manchester United on Sunday.

Pochettino’s men thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 24 hours earlier and it was yet another performance from Spurs that highlighted their title credentials.

It it not just in the Premier League that Spurs and Chelsea are doing battle, with the two sides due to meet at Wembley this weekend in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

And Carragher believes that after all of Spurs’ work this season, the Lilywhites should really be targeting FA Cup success.

“We are thinking about the league but if I’m in Tottenham’s shoes, this week is all about the FA Cup and the chance for this team to get a trophy,” Carragher told Monday Night Football.

“This team is too good not to win things. We have watched them for two or three years and we love watching them. We want to see them do well.

“They’ve got young English players and for the manager, it would be a travesty in two or three years’ time if this team haven’t won something. They have to go and win that FA Cup.”

Neville, however, believes Spurs can still catch up with their London rivals and stun everyone by getting their hands on the league title.

“The one thing that lets Tottenham down is the big games,” Neville added. “The big moments to go and win a league or maybe an FA Cup.

“Can they go and beat Chelsea next week in a semi-final and get that real big moment? You would still have to fancy Chelsea with the run-in that they’ve got. Four points is not a big lead, but could they turn that to two?

“Four points is still two games. Chelsea can still afford to drop points in a game and are still in front. If you can get it to three points or below – where every single game is going to make a difference – that’s when you can see real pressure get put on Chelsea.

“But let’s not forget last season when Tottenham were getting closer to Leicester and they dropped off. There will be more pressure on them, the closer they get to Chelsea also.”
