Paul Merson backs Chelsea to beat Manchester United this weekend

Paul Merson believes Chelsea will overcome Manchester United when the sides meet at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues have endured a difficult campaign so far, but they remain unbeaten since Guus Hiddink was appointed as interim manager, and Merson expects them to prevail against Louis van Gaal’s side.

The two sides drew 0-0 when they met in December, and Merson is anticipating another close encounter, but he feels that Chelsea will come out on top.

Merson told Sky Sports: “This is a big game and a great way to end the weekend – a proper Super Sunday clash. Chelsea haven’t got much to play for – they can’t win the league or get top four – so I was surprised they didn’t open the game up at Watford and have a go. That’s been disappointing really.

“United probably had less possession than they’ve had all season against Stoke and they won 3-0. Michael Carrick’s return was key, he got the ball forward quickly and provided better service. This will be a good game, and I fancy Chelsea to edge this one.”

United will undoubtedly have received a confidence boost as a consequence of their emphatic victory over Stoke City, although there is still much more work for Van Gaal to do in order to turn matters around at the club.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are simply attempting to regain belief and momentum as they emerge from their disastrous first half of the campaign.

The Blues, who have created 251 chances in the Premier League this season, are still languishing in 13th place in the table.

Meanwhile, United, who have scored 31 goals in the top flight this campaign, are currently fifth and find themselves five points adrift of the much-coveted fourth place.

United are still without several players due to injury, with Ashley Young and Bastian Schweinsteiger amongst their absentees, but Chelsea could have Loic Remy back available.
