Paul Scholes renews Van Gaal criticism ahead of FA Cup final

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has taken another swipe at Louis van Gaal ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final .

The Red Devils will take on Crystal Palace at Wembley looking to save their season with what would be their only piece of major silverware.

While Scholes agrees an FA Cup triumph is long overdue, he also believes it has not been a priority for United in recent years due to consistently challenging for Premier League and Champions League honours.

They were knocked out of Europe’s top competition in the group stage this season, and have failed to qualify for next term having finished fifth in the Premier League.

“It’s been disappointing as we obviously want to be in the FA Cup final as it’s a big day,” Scholes told the Manchester Evening News.

“It’s long overdue but I also think it hasn’t really been a priority. We all know it’s a massive major competition but was it the priority over the Champions League or the Premier League?

“We always seem to go after those two which you can probably understand and a lot of the times we would go out of the FA Cup as our team was missing players that would needed to be rested for the big Champions League and Premier League games.”

On the game itself, Scholes is expecting a tough test for his former side, despite United heading to Wembley as short-priced favourites to lift the trophy.

Palace have never won the FA Cup, and the ex-England midfielder believes they will provide a stern opposition under the arch.

“I think people are probably assuming United are going to win it but it’s going to be a tough game,” he added.

“Crystal Palace are a decent side and I think they can cause any teams problems, so I think it will be tight.”
